Per_Forming a Collection

2013 -16
Madre Museum, Naples, Italy

Per_forming a collection is a project in progress that aims to shape the idea of the collection like a living organism, which grows and is articulated over time. It combines archival research with commissions for new works created in situ while uniting the dimension of the museum as a place of encounter and participation with the idea of the collection as an unending story, always open to new connections.

Per_forming a collection is a long term project that merges the dimension of the museum as a place for encounters, participation and learning. The focus is not on a specific theme, group or historical period, but on artists of different generations, comprising new productions and historical works, predominantly created or shown in Naples from the 1960s down to the recent years.

The museum's collection is conceived as a work in progress based on an exchange of ideas, as a collective portrait and the place for a shared rewriting of art history. Per_forming a collection proposes a way to experience the museum in the name of the multiplicity of experiences and voices, thinking about the concept of a “collection” as:

· A collection of works but also of documents and testimonies, in order to reconstruct the stratified social and cultural contexts in which the works themselves have been produced, received and interpreted.

· A twofold instrument that takes account of the past in an active relationship with the present.

· A constellation of materials that make it possible to move beyond the strict criteria of art history as a form of rigid storytelling, and in which the local dimension and the international horizon are intertwined and redefine each other.
