Su Hui-Yu

The Trio Hall

May - July 2023
MOCA - Museum of Contemporary Art, Taipei, Taiwan

The Trio Hall by artist Su Hui-Yu transforms MOCA Taipei into a hybridized space where fiction, history and visual experimentation coalesce. Drawing inspiration from the forgotten Taiwanese film genre Xan Ting, known for its fixed triadic settings of the living room, dining room and nightclub, the artist revives this cinematic legacy to reflect on the complexities of censorship and escapism during Taiwan’s martial law era.

The project seamlessly combines an immersive exhibition and a live film set. Visitors enter not as mere observers but as implicated subjects in an unfolding production. The space operates simultaneously as a gallery and TV studio, where past and present collide in a vivid montage of RGB/RYB color systems, pop culture relics, militarist aesthetics and traces of East-West cultural exchange.

Su performs an ironic deconstruction of visual history, staging a politically resonant environment that blurs the lines between spectacle and reality. The Trio Hall exemplifies Su’s signature strategy of “re-shooting” as a means to activate memory, question historical narratives and reimagine collective imaginaries in postcolonial East Asia.
